I’ve been asked a lot about this question during this month
of FREE Osteopathic Consultation and the answer to that is “no”. Osteopathy is a
very gentle, non-aggressive type of manual therapy. Osteopathic treatment
uses mobilization techniques to increase the range of motion at a slow speed, oscillations (movement back and forth at a regular speed),
stretching and pausing or “hold” at the end range of motion. While other
techniques tends to be more aggressive,
taking the joint of out its elastic barrier for example: neck/cervical manipulation
also known as the “pop” or “crack” sound you hear at the end range of motion by
using high velocity thrust. There are of course other techniques used by Manual
Osteopaths during treatment such as Soft Tissue Techniques, Muscle Energy
Techniques, and Myofascial Releases (just to name a few) are all gentle.
