I’ve been asked a lot about this question during this month of FREE Osteopathic Consultation and the answer to that is “no”. Osteopathy is a very gentle, non-aggressive type of manual therapy. Osteopathic treatment uses mobilization techniques to increase the range of motion at a slow speed, oscillations (movement back and forth at a regular speed), stretching and pausing or “hold” at the end range of motion. While other techniques tends to be more aggressive,  taking the joint of out its elastic barrier for example: neck/cervical manipulation also known as the “pop” or “crack” sound you hear at the end range of motion by using high velocity thrust. There are of course other techniques used by Manual Osteopaths during treatment such as Soft Tissue Techniques, Muscle Energy Techniques, and Myofascial Releases (just to name a few) are all gentle. Call in today and find out how I can help you!

Patient of mine asked today: Why do I have pain in the thighs that I didn’t even notice when it was just my knees bothering me?

Most of the time we don't notices these things because there isn't any "pain" or "hidden pain" and we tend to ignore these issue till it becomes chronic pain. By then, it will take longer duration of treatment to restore balance. In fact, "pain" is the last sign/symptom of defense, informing you of an area that requires your attention. Just because you do not feel pain in an area, it does not mean that the structure (bone, joints, muscle, etc) is in a homeostasis (balance) state. Knee pain can have multiple factors, not just directly at that area but also its “surrounding” and “connections”. In your case, the thighs have few tender points that is restricting the structure, which may lead to the knee pain. It’s like investigation work, gathering all the evidence (pain), build a connection (assessing the body as a whole) and conclusion (treatment plan). Many people loves seeing Manual Osteopaths for that main reason!

Is Osteopathy covered under OHIP or Extended Health Care (EHC)?

Osteopathy, Low Back Pain, Sciatica, Hip Pain, LBP, Trigger Point
Unfortunately, OHIP does not cover Manual Osteopathy Treatment at this moment. However, associations such as Ontario Osteopathic and Alternative Medicine Association, and Society of Osteopath of Canada does allow their members to offer patients the option to submit claims through their Extended Health Care (EHC) insurance.
